Happy International Day of Older Persons – to celebrate we’re throwing the spotlight on POW (Performing Older Women).

POW supports women, trans and non-binary people aged 40+ to discover the joy of circus skills while proving that circus, movement and play are definitely for all ages. Many participants (and even trainers) are in their 60s and 70s!

“ I feel very empowered, because I’m having fun and being fit. It’s not just about doing vigorous training. We have fun and beautiful music. It’s a joy. – POW participant

Started in 1995 as a project from the Women’s Circus, POW soon established its identity as a community/social circus in its own right. POW Circus is a unique presence in Melbourne arts. Its strength is in the mature age of its members, the physical nature of their performance and the rarely heard stories the group brings to light.

POW has been a vibrant feature of Melbourne’s festival circuit and has appeared at events like White Night and Midsumma with performances and workshops.

In 2021 Women’s Circus were delighted to officially partner with POW, supporting them administratively so they can keep doing what they do best – playing, creating, and connecting with other like-minded older people to help them find their circus spirit.

Here’s to you POW and all your wonderful founders, trainers and participants.
