New Women* is a unique six month allsorts circus program for beginners that has been offered at Women’s Circus since its inception in 1991. If you’re new to circus or want to train a range of skills, we recommend New Women*, designed to introduce beginners to the language of circus. New Women* is an opportunity to get to know our community and make friends while offering a taste of all our speciality areas including acrobalance, aerials, juggling and manipulation, handstands, tumbling and ensemble performance. Great for developing strength and fitness, New Women* allows participants to build a solid foundation in a broad range of circus arts. New members of all levels of skill and fitness are encouraged to join New Women* before taking up skill-specific classes at the Women’s Circus. AcroFIT is open to all levels and involves a rockin’ combination of acrobalance and strength and conditioning training. Cardio work along with handstand drills will keep you shipshape for circus action, while you'll develop a strong foundation of key acrobalance shapes and skills, including a mixture of pair work, small group skills and big pyramids. An exciting opportunity to flex your circus muscles in a fun but rigorous environment. This satellite class is run by two core Women's Circus trainer at Northcote Town Hall. (NO MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED!) This class offers a combination of aerial training and targeted strength and conditioning work to get you in ship shape for circus action. A great way to build your fitness and confidence while developing aerial skills. The focus of this class will be on body conditioning, body awareness, and strength building alongside skills development primarily in trapeze and tissu. The Creative Performance Ensemble is a new undertaking in 2018 that gives members the opportunity to learn creative development and performance skills. The class will explore theatrical skill sets and languages such as puppetry, bouffon, mask, dance, butoh, verbatim theatre, acting, improvisation and more, with a different focus each term. The Performance Ensemble will be the creative engine room for Women's Circus pop-up performances, and ensemble members will be offered performance opportunities throughout the year. We aim for performances to have a political edge, using physical theatre, circus skills, street theatre and feminist theory to agitate for radical change. Participants should be curious, adventurous and willing to give and receive creative offers and collaborate generously with others. This intermediate to advanced acrobalance class is perfect for members who have a solid grounding in acrobalance basics and are ready to expand their repertoire with more challenging moves and transitions. With a focus on developing technique and strength as well as learning new skills, it's a place to expand your trick repertoire in a fun but focused environment. Not-So-New Women* is an allsorts circus program for all members. This class provides the opportunity to progress and refresh your skills in all our speciality areas including acrobalance, aerials, juggling and manipulation, handstands, tumbling and ensemble performance. It is great for developing strength and fitness in a fun environment. Members who have just completed New Women, who have taken a break from training, or who are interested in revisiting their full range of circus skills are encouraged to enrol. Led by Women's Circus trainer, Po Po Mo Co (Post Post Modern Comedy) Troupe member, and writer/director/performer Lily Fish, this is an accessible movement class designed to increase kinaesthetic awareness. Participants will expand their body awareness, movement possibilities and stage presence through image based provocations. Circus Pole classes cover basic climbs and well as tricks and sequencing. The class covers both solo tricks and partner or group moves. Aerial CREATE introduces and consolidates aerial work using a variety of aerial equipment, including trapeze, tissu, rope, cloud swing, tissu loop, aerial hoop and aerial cube. The sessions focus on both building a strong foundation of basic aerial technique (on various equipment) and creative lab time. A series of exploratory and creative tasks are offered weekly to provide space to play, create, expand, explore, and re-imagine what aerials can be.
